Constantly striving for self-improvement is not only misleading, but unachievable. 

“I didn’t want to tell anyone my husband was an addict, and my life was falling apart, piece by piece. I would grit my teeth and tell myself that I just needed to be “strong” enough to get through it.  I isolated myself from others so that they wouldn’t see how much I was suffering.  I tried to self-help my way through this nightmare, and failed”.

It’s not that you should stop trying to become the best version of you, but we do need to give ourselves a break from this continuous self-improvement. Self-gurus and the whole internet want to sell us the idea that we need to be constantly improving and that this is the answer to everything; self-love, self-care, heal, manifest, gratitude, be positive, do better, be better, which can make us feel so deflated and quite frankly miserable. 

Believing that you need to be constantly striving to improve yourself is not only misleading, but unachievable.  You may also end up doing things that you have read you ‘should’ be doing rather than those you want to or even enjoy. As if we can improve ourselves to a point we don’t have to deal with life’s challenges any more! 

“You can read all the self-help books you want, but it would take an extraordinary amount of willpower, grit, and just unnecessary effort to do it all on your own”.

I admit, I did become obsessed with self-help books.  They understood what I was going through, and were there for me without judgment.  After years of self-help reading, I still dabble, but I don’t read self-help nearly as much as I did. Know why? Because I’ve learned that self-help isn’t the answer.

“Self-improvement alone will ruin your life”.

This obsession with self-improvement leaves us feeling guilty, ashamed, and not good enough, creating further stress. We end up feeling physically, emotionally, or mentally exhausted.  All this has serious consequences on our self-esteem.

It wasn’t until I reached out for help that my true healing began. People need other people. At Beyond we know that everyone’s journey is different.  However, we do know that deeper self-acceptance comes when we connect with like-minded people with whom we can be ourselves, share our stories, our true thoughts, and our feelings.  We know how to help and guide you.  We have been where you are, and have helped many who have.  You don’t need to do it alone.
